What is Discrete Circuitry?

Discrete circuits are made up of individual components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors and transistors mounted independently on a printed circuit board. Early gaming systems, before the invention of the integrated chip, used discrete circuitry. An integrated circuit has all the aforementioned individual components etched directly into layers of silicon. Later Pong systems used integrated chips, or Pong-on-a-chip.
